After spending all my weekend playing with parbreastions, commands, bootloaders and DDS4 tapes I've come to this conclusion:

mount: could not find filesystem '-dev-root' setuproot: movingdev failed: No such file or directory setuproot: error mountingproc: No such file or directory setuproot: error mountingsys: No such file or directory switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

What I did so far:

1) Installed a fresh guinea pig copy of Fedora Core 5 with the following parbreastion table

sda1, 100 MB,boot sda2, 25.000 MB, (root) sda3, 500 MB, swap

2) mounted sda2 in the directory foo

3) moved to foo

4) tar -cvpf dev-st0 home etc var boot proc usr *.* ... everything but dev. (with no errors, after countless tries)

5) moved to

6) tried to umount dev-sda2

7) rebooted the system because sda2 was locked by something

8) booted again with CD and then mke2fs -j dev-sda2

9) mounteddev-sda2 in foo

10) moved to foo

11) tar -vxpfdev-st0

12) grub

13) root (hd0,0)

14) setup (hd0)

15) quit

16) reboot

17) I'm at the beginning again
