Captain Dondo I remember a coupla decades ago, I worked for a large regulated monopoly that pretty much does not exist anymore. While originally well...

I agree with the other posters; the issue is probably disk IO. My machine at home is an old Athlon 1500, not the fastest thing in the world. My work machine is a 1.5GHz Xeon which should be faster by all accounts. But when doing a heavy compile the old Athlon remains perfectly usable while the Xeon becomes nearly unusable.

The difference is that my machine at home has a SCSI drive while the work accountants... I use this machine for system development; I requested a SMP 64 bit opteron with 15K SCSI drives. I got an old mothballed server with IDE drives and a new video card - only because the old video card was an s3 PCI and unusable for GUI development.... The concept of paying me to sit and watch this thing grind away for hours every day is lost on performance at the keyboard is lost. IDE just wasn't made for heavy mutli-process I-O.

Depending on your motherboard, it may ignore interrupts on some I-O like serial ports, keyboard and mouse entirely while it deals with IDE I-O. If you have a really crappy mobo, you may improve the situation by going to a PCI IDE controller card, but the real solution is to run SCSI drives in any machine that does heavy disk I-O.
