Desperate COLANUTS. Married to Linux but still have no life
Here is a list of the hardcore, rabid, Linux users who hand out in comp.os.linux.advocacy and crunk Linux. William Poaster --- A former troll of the 24hr.support groups where...

If one is mucking about the system and setting up servers like LAMP, it's not too much of a stretch to expect that person has a good grasp of basic sysadmin knowledge. Quite frankly, I'm was a little embarrbutted to admit *I* didn't know this simple fact. But, what the Hell, sometimes these little bits of knowledge fall through the cracks. As for the mysql ref docs, you can't expect them to teach you everything about Linux. Well, you can, but it's not realistic.

Doing a cursory look, it appears this subject is covered in detail in The MySQL Access Privilege System (5.5 or 5.6, depending on version). It even tells how to do it from a win box using an ssh client. I've not read this section yet as I've taken another tack and am using phpmyadmin to accomplish this task. One of the great things about mysql are all the 3rd party support apps.

by you. First of all, I wasn't addressing you. But, since you've butted in, I will now. Secondly, I have used mysql docs to configure my mysql server. They worked...

I respect your opinion on that and I'll agree that there's a lot of poorly written Linux info. Also, I think one's ability to digest written info is a very individual thing. Some ppl have no problem with pure instructional text, others need lots of examples, still others require visual aids and graphics. Fortunately, there's no shortage of books on mysql to fit everyones needs. I, myself, never buy a book until I've gone down to the book store and spent some time with it and-or read reviews on it.

I don't think samba docs are any better written than mysql's, but again, this is just opinion. The one thing I *D0* like about mysql's ref doc is that it's up to date and accurate! I've got at least 3 mysql-php books and page full of bookmarks, but when I get in a jam, it's the mysql ref doc that gets me out.
