"Generic" meaning "VESA"? Ick! Xorg 6.8.2 says the "radeon" X module should support the 9800PRO in 2D. If SuSE 9.2 shipped with an older Xorg, its radeon module might not support that chipset, though it *should*. Check the man page for radeon and make sure that the 9800PRO is mentioned. Do *not* use VESA if you can avoid it, it sucks in many ways.
