Be sure to check with the colo company and determine that they are not using dhcp to buttign your static IP address. Many (most?) do use dhcp to provide all networking params, even static IPs. If so, you should not have to make any changes. If they want you to hand configure just your IP, then they are likely still using dhcp to provide the other networking params. In this case your rack server would use a DHCPINFORM option in its initial request. Even in this case there are ways to access your rack server when it gets back home without resorting to "admin magic scripts". The same "tricks" will work even if you hand wire all the network params. Just be sure to write them all down for future use;-)

I would suspect that the colo company is using dhcp to buttign your static IP. It's really the only way they can be sure that you get the IP (and other network params) theyintend you to get.

If they are requiring you to hand wire the network params, check back here for ways to avoid having to handle this "alternative use" scenario on the rack server. A few craftily chosen ip commands on the PC at your home will provide the PC enough connectivity to login to the server and change the network setup as your needs require if and when the rack server comes back home.

After all, how often do you expect this server to come back?

cheers, prg
