So cheap that I've had no takers for a used Thinkpad A22p (PIII-900, 384M, 32G, 1600x1200 Rage128, 8-4-16x CD-RW, floppy, built-in e100 NIC, 1 USB 1, built like a tank, weighs too much, everything works) at $300. YMMV if you're somewhere that's not the USA. Not quite. If you have 2 machines and no switch, you need a crossover cable *unless* the NICs can auto-detect that they're hooked up to a straight-through cable. Some NICs can do this, many older NICs can't. Small 5-port switches should be available for about $30 if you want to expand your network later. (This buttumes wired Ethernet, if you want 802.11, that's totally different.) Why? Use a network filesystem; it's easier and more flexible even if the protocol overhead is higher. OS X should be able to speak SMB, so just set up Samba on the Linux box. xine, libdvdcss, xmms, and mplayer all have "ppc" as a supported build target in their recent Gentoo ebuilds. So using this eMac as a media center might work. Main problem is that the evil binary-only nVidia module doesn't have a PPC version, so no fast 3D for you. XV should work, though. Why would it be a bit difficult if the necessary software builds and runs on PPC?
