Well, that's positively ancient. If you're now responsible for this thing, you should run a new distro under it as soon as you have enough experience to do so.

No problem. rpm -Uvh the Samba RPMs, then edit theetc-samba-smb.conf file, then "-etc-init.d-smb start" to start it. Do something like "chkconfig smb default on" to make it so that Samba will start in all runlevels except single-user. You'll have to check your docs for the exact command, since I don't use Redhat 9.

An install of Redhat 9, I hope.

Can't find *what* file? If you don't understand an error message, you should report it verbatim. I did an strace on smbstatus here, and I think you meant "smbstatus couldn't findetc-samba-smb.conf". That file is Samba's config file, and it must be correct for what you're attempting to do. Even something like Redhat 9 should've included an example smb.conf file with lots of helpful comments with a default Samba install. If not, Google "Samba config file example" for some help.

"ps auxw grep smbd" or "pgrep smbd" should return a line containing smbd or a PID if smbd is running.

.edu address. Many universities-colleges in the USA have Linux User Groups buttociated with them. There are typically a few LUG members who know what they're doing, so find one of them and offer him beer and pizza in exchange for solving this Samba problem. HTH,
