OpenSolaris Speed VS. Linux. 4196Both (Gentoo and NetBSD pkgsrc) use a monolitic approach that I don't like. With both, you first need to install 250 MB of "skeleton files". With NetBSD pkgsrc you in addition need to have several ported NetBSD binaries (e.g. a bsd make that cannot be compiled without a bsd make :-() and you need to install the system on a fixed predefined path. I don't like this and for this reason, I did write a Schily Source Package System that is based on 10 year old ideas: Based on my Schily Makefilesystem, I did develop my source package system in a modular may, based on the Slottable Source Plugin Module System (SSPM). It is able to "boot" from a shell script with a size of less than 10 kB. OpenSolaris Speed VS. Linux. 4198 Technically, it was only "postponed" but I think we all knew it was canceeled, I grant you that. But if IBM doesn't flip flop, what was; OSF? Monterey? But these are all... If you like to test, first fetch 'src-get' make it executable (chmod +x src-get) and put it into a directory in the search PATH. Then create a new and empty directory 'mkdir sps' and chdir to that directory 'cd sps'. Now call 'src-get init' and wait 2-3 seconds. You will end up with a Schily makefile system skeleon installed in the current directory. Now call 'src-get setup' and wait 3-15 minutes (depending on the speed of the machine). This will set fetch-compile-setup a minimum set of binaries in e.g. "bins-i386-sunos5-cc". Now you may call e.g. 'src-get list' and will see a list of available packages. If you like to install all 5 currently available soure ports, call 'src-get install all' this demonstrates that dependencies and empty packages (speudo packages) already work. Once you are ready, you may call 'src-get compile' or 'src-get shell' and then call 'smake'. Please comment. Note that I am looking for people who are willing to help me creating the packages. OpenSolaris Speed VS. Linux. 4197 OK, let us understand that we are talking here about Beta software that is updated once a month. Now, your Solaris Express... --
