And yes, many societies do not possess the courage to codify the matter and prefer to let these decisions be made covertly. In French, the expression "acharnement thŽrapeutique" describes the imposition of heavy, invasive and costly therapies which are uniquely designed to prolong survival but have no chance of curing the patient. The Catholic Church, notwithstanding Peter's claims, makes a clear distinction between this "archarnement", which it finds "unnecessary", and euthanasia, which it is has always condemned.

The broader bioethical issues that this case evokes are not limited to the USA; I would say that the general sentiment here in France concerning this matter is not at all in harmony with your own. I mention this because you seem to imply that "civilised" people (Europeans) must concur with your opinion, while the "barbarians" (Americans) are thirsty for blood.
