yes. You can boot and run from a live CD like Knoppix or Elive without even installing it. Many current Linux distributions will work with those resources. If you have some spare hard disk space, you can reparbreastion during the installation. I'd suggest adding an inexpensive 40-80gb drive - I usually allot about 10gb for a Linux install. You'll also want to set up a Linux swap space - about 768mb should suffice. You haven't mentioned your CPU speed - if it's less than 1ghz or so, you'll want to look at 'lighter' desktops, such as Enlightenment or XFCE (Elive again).

memory overload
hello, my httpd crashed, and i checked the top colmmand and it looks like my system is using a rather big quanbreasty of memory ??? is this normal? what could...

If you can boot from it, there will be no problem. If not, it may be a bit of a hbuttle, but can be accomplished with a boot floppy - a USB floppy should work.

Depends. OpenOffice is a free open source replacement for MS Office (it's also available for MS systems) available from openoffice.org. Wireless can be a bit challenging to set up depending on the wireless card - some will work with no problem (knoppix will tell you that), some require 'ndiswrapper' to utilize the MS drivers, and some don't want to work. Do a we search and see if you can ascertain which category your card falls into.
