Apt-get won't buy you any extra convenience but will provide less timely updates, IMO. completely out abandon running on have Been quite some time since I've used Debian, but I never install Zope and Plone from distro packages. Same for Apache. Why would you want to be tied to the release schedule provided by the distro package maintainer? Zope's only real requirement is Python version should you experiment with a version not supplied with Zope. Both move pretty quickly. I've never had any real problems installing any of the three from the source sites-mirrors. Apache I do get in binary form, but Zope and Plone use an embedded Python environment that distro packaging won't help with anyway. Nor will distro packages help with add-ons you will almost certainly want to try out. The .tgz files are consistent, relocatable, and are the standard means of distributing these applications. If you have any questions about installing-running them on any particular distro, I would suggest you look at the mailing list archives. If you plan to use any "stable" distro version, the kinks should already be worked out and any special configuration needs are almost buttured to be already tested. If you want to try them out on the latest distro version of your favorite, check the lists and-or just try them out. Over the years there have been occbuttional distro hiccups that were quickly fixed -- slack being the exception as a rule. You will be visiting both sites regularly, anyway, to keep up and to get pointers on customizing for your needs. So downloading the .tgz files will not be "out of the way". Just check the readme and install notes for any sepcial notes re: Debian to be safe, download the .tgz files and install them. Just keep a backup of your data.fs file and site specific customizations. Apache latest running on distro latest is not something I do much anymore. I do it sometimes just for fun, but in real life familiarity and known stability win out every time. hth, prg email above disabled
