tracks.

He told you what he did, he was not giving instructions on how to do it.

crontab -e 30 4 * * * rsync -aqname-of-directory backup:-name-of-backup-directory

and then exit the editor. Now every night at 4:30 AM your system will make a backup ofname-of-directory onto the backup machine (backup: is the name of the machine on which the backups are stored. If it is the same machine then the backup: name is not needed)

If you want it also to remove files which have been erased on your system, put --delete after the -aq

Yes,

It is called learning how to use your tools. I suspect most monkeys would not know what to do with a CDRom either. If you want to use something you learn enough to use it.

It is a way of telling your computer to carry out some job periodically -- you control the period, and the job. The program which carries out your instructions of keeping track of the time and then running the program is called cron.

On Sun, 02 Apr 2006 23:45:26 -0400, Richard Steiner Actually Windows does have the backup tool but it is not a very good tool. Spending $49.99 for Ghost, or less on ebay...

Copy them and use them. What do you do with any instructions?

This says "make up a name which is just the full day of the week." This command says, run the command between the two backquotes, in this case date +%A and buttign the output to the variable BACKUPDIR

By the name this is a string of options which are eitehr clear or can be looked up by looking at man rsync.

Where to look for commands. This also makes sure that some hacker has not installed a bogus rsync in saytmp and that that directory hasbeen put into the path.

This is a sneaky trick to clean out last weeks backup. I have no idea why anyone would want to do this, since the advantage of rsync is to just transmit that which has changed. Thus if last weeks backup is almost the same as this week's very littly is transmitted. This ensures that everything is transmitted.

Here in comp.os.linux.misc, Windows comes with only a few basic tools and utilities out of the box, requiring users to purchase...

You like living in ignorance?

Who said it was easier. It is just no harder. and you claimed there was no equivalent of Ghost.

OOOOO.

OOOO

sophisticated? One line.

Fine use Ghost. Just do not claim that there is nothing that can do the job under Linux. We are not trying to convert you, just stopping you from delivering untruths.
