More sensible data structures that don't take up so much space. Just to illustrate with a somewhat different situation, imagine a list of permutations on n objects as being an array of n! integers, all of which are 0's and 1's, which gets big fast with n. But if the list is generally going to be small, consisting of k permutations, it's better to have an array of k integers (or long or whatever) that are indices of the permutations in a standard enumeration of all permutations.

That's a good point. I think this is the first time that anyone has given me a good argument for using an old version of RH instead of a more recent one. Maybe I should downgrade instead... :)
