thanks for your reply. til now, i had no idea what is udev for :-(

On 2 Oct 2006 06:37:58 -0700, freightcar staggered into the Black Sun and said: ? It's been talked about at a low but consistent...

so I have these udev etc files grep -r mdetc-udev-etc-udev-compat-full.rules:KERNEL=="md0-9*", SYMLINK+="%k"etc-udev-devfs.rules:KERNEL=="md0-9*",NAME="md-%n", SYMLINK+="%k"etc-udev-rules.d-z60mdadm.rules:KERNEL=="md0-9*", NAME=, SYMLINK=etc-udev-mdadm.rules:KERNEL=="md0-9*", NAME=, SYMLINK=etc-udev-compat.rules:KERNEL=="md0-9*", SYMLINK+="%k"

i see that inetc-udev-devfs.rules is md-%n which I guess is used to create md-0 device, and there is the SYMLINK+="%k" part which i guess should create symlink (-dev-md0) but the problem is the symlink is not created after reboot and this is what i have indev

lsdev-md* total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 2006-10-01 18:40 . drwxr-xr-x 15 root root 13340 2006-10-01 18:40 .. brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 2006-10-01 18:40 0

so only that 0 device is there and no symlink.otherwise it is working when usingdev-md-0. i noticed that UUID's too and dont understand it either but they look sam,ne. so still I wonder why the symlink is not created
