thanks for your reply. til now, i had no idea what is udev for :-( so I have these udev etc files grep -r mdetc-udev-etc-udev-compat-full.rules:KERNEL=="md0-9*", SYMLINK+="%k"etc...

debian etch 2.6.16

i created an array mdadm --createdev-md0 --level=1 --raid-disks=2 missingdev-sdb1

why there are 2 raid arraysdev-md0 anddev-md-0 ?

mdadm --detail --scan ARRAYdev-md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 name=0 UUID=387e3f80:6899bfa8:b5a870db:5a4d40ec mdadm --examine --scan ARRAYdev-md-0 level=raid1 metadata=1 num-devices=2 UUID=387e3f8068:99bfa8b5:a870db5a:4d40ec name=0

in grub i have to use root=-dev-md-0 (not md0). if i use md0 it will wait few minutes saying "waiting for root fs" and then go to initramfs shell. if i usedev-md-0 it will boot successfully and when I check mdadm i get this:

mdadm --examine --scan ARRAYdev-md-0 level=raid1 metadata=1 num-devices=2 UUID=610fd091a3:b533061e:fc68ceeb:d3b836 name=0 fox2:~# mdadm --detail --scan ARRAYdev-md-0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 name=0 UUID=610fd091:a3b53306:1efc68ce:ebd3b836

i tried to recreate the array with zero-superblock and the create again.

not that i mind the array to bedev-md-0 instead ofdev-md0, but i guess there is some problem if i createdev-md0 and end up withdev-md-0

thanks for help
