RHEL high percentage of processor time from system 5196
I have a data-intensive set of programs, using IBM's DB2 V8.1.7 (IIRC). I used to run it on a machine with two 10,000 rpm Ultra-2 SCSI hard drives and...

I'm running RHEL on a dual Xeon box. When I run any kind of Fortran program that I've compiled, the system load is very high, for example:

The disk i-o is actually pretty low ... I really don't think it should be an issue. No other processes are...

Ben It depends what is going on. I run BOINC projects at nice 19 to gobble up the spare time doing something remotely useful. So...

I've seen some other people complain about this in the past, but no good answers ever sprung up. If the RHEL box is idling, then of course the system loads are negligible. These programs are moderately i-o intensive to disk -- although why would RHEL have such a hard time vs. Fedora Core?

Unfortunately I have no control over the RHEL machine, so I can't go in and tweak things. I am friends with the sysadmin, so I could ask him to do certain things.

Thanks for your ideas!

-Ben
