No you don't. I quote the manual: --exclude FILE This option allows you to selectively exclude certain files from...

That's a strange statement, how can something NOT be mounted under?

To see what's under do 'ls'. For example:

total 76 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 2 2003 bindrwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Sep 11 12:12 bootdrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Dec 31 1968 plus 1 devdrwxr-xr-x 68 root root 4096 Sep 11 23:08 etcdrwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Aug 25 11:56 homedrwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 21 2001 initrddrwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Aug 25 23:18 libdrwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 16 2002 lost+founddrwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Apr 15 08:59 mntdrwxr-xr-x 40 dane dane 4096 Aug 19 12:28 mp3drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Apr 15 09:01 newdrwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 May 9 2002 optdrwxr-xr-x 11 dane dane 4096 Dec 5 2004 phonodr-xr-xr-x 93 root root 0 Sep 11 08:09 procdrwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 5 2004 sbindrwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 12 2002 swapdrwxrwxrwt 16 root root 4096 Sep 15 14:03 tmpdrwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 21 2002 udrwxr-xr-x 16 root root 4096 Apr 15 09:49 usrdrwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 Apr 7 2003 var

If you are going to rsync from those are the things you should think about excluding.

Personally, I'd take a different approach and list the things I do want to rsync.
