Well, yes. Obtaining a good result under constraints. Such as the best control of a robot arm movement given the fitted actuators and dampers, and the given number of joints. Or keeping your tyres braking and not skidding given only the sensors and brakes fitted (and no advance knowledge of the road). In every case there is an ideal perfection that must be approximated to (literally "got close to").

Your statement talks about approximating a more computationally expensive algorithm with a less expensive one. Fair enough. But it's likely that both are approximations to some other ideal.

But you must do something in particular when you have located the area of interest in the picture. What is it?

Oh - I see. Simple flood-fill from the surrounds, maybe darkened a little. Or they might be working in the colour spectrum - maybe they know what colour blood is, and they can subtract the spectrum of blood from the spectrum in that area, reversing the real physical filtering that was done. I don't know.

It would do whatever you do.

Let a computer do all that. If you like, direct it by additional simple commands ("two people, center, standing, ...").
