I have a theory as to why windows converts seem to have so much trouble with this concept when they switch to linux. Manuals in the windows world are f***ing useless. We recently purchased a rather extensive and expensive security product that runs on windows 2000 and controls doors and such in the buildings (not my decision...I hate windows). So we downloaded the manual and decided to print out only those parts that seemed important. Now I am looking through them and they are all pointless step by step instructions on navigating a GUI. This isn't the user manual mind you....that is whole different 2000 page monstrosity.

For example, looking in the section on database management (uses sql 2000) thinking I would find stuff about *shock* the database in there I instead find step by step instructions for starting up an SQL client and navigating the tables and views found there. Not one iota of information about what those tables will be or what they are used for. I feel like I have been offended! Did you call me an idiot?

Press power button See section on operation of main processing unit on page 33.LARGE IMAGE If this fails refer to operation of standard power recepticle on page 99 4. Click start IMAGE OF ENTIRE DESKTOP See section on desktop navigation on page 103. 5. Choose ProgramX in program menu YOU GET THE IDEA See section on start menu and program menu navigation on page 304. ... ... 99. Choose "Shut down" in drop down box See section on operating system shutdown on page 1. 100. If reading this caused your head to explode please dial 911 and seek medical attention. See section on telephone operation on page 900450 and emergency numbers on page 499876573849920.

On the other hand, most linux manuals actually seem helpful. I usually find some information on the database schema in the documentation if in no other form than as a set of SQL statements. When I think about it, I think maybe windows users are just so used to a manual being thousands of pages of useless tripe that cannot be navigated or digested in a lifetime. Maybe we should be more forgiving of these poor souls...

Anyway, I'm just going to wait for the program to arrive and play around with it until I figure it all out. FTFM!!!

And that's incredibly arrogant of you to put yourself above others whose hobbies-professions do not involve *nix. I disagree with that, but it's irrelevant anyway. OK, so are you saying...
