Udev was supposed to be able to lock a given device to a given driver and process.

This is because so many devices now can be hotplugged. cameras, flash memory devices and so on. The idea is that one can lock a device to a process via udev. A device in udev can be defined by things like unique manufactors' number or some other characteristic such as a NIC number for a LAN enabled device.

I have used Linux but I prefer windows because it is more universally accepted and I find that things just work. I tried using Linux on my dorm system last year by dual booting and...

This would allow one to set up udev so that a camera or laptop will always be linked to the samedev- proc set up as its added or removed.

It was also supposed to make it easier to add drivers and link them to the overall system. and add new clbuttes of devices and drivers easier.

So yes, that is what it is about but its also more than a mere manner of so linking proc - dev.

It adds more layers of abstraction to the overall system. Its supposed to make it eventually, easier to deal with the flood on new devices and their drivers instead of having to put every known driver to mankind on a distribution's CD.
