Perhaps things are different in the U.S., but I found the post rather puzzling, Rex. My own "first day...

A google search last night for stuff related to loader.c turned up a hit which I neglected to write down but which I couldn't go to anyway. That doesn't matter. What does matter is that the descriptive blurb contained a string that strongly suggested that the source for loader.c resides in one of the anaconda rpm files, anaconda-7.1-5.i386.rpm or anaconda-runtime-7.1-5.i386.rpm, I think the former. I have both rpm files.

That's the good news. The bad news is that I am really bad at using rpm and don't entirely trust the varmint. I've read the documentation and am no wiser for it. Here is what I want to do: (1) get a list of all the files in the rpm file. (2) extract one of them into the directory that I, an ordinary user, happen to be owner of, e.g. the file loader.c. (3) not have to be root. (4) not have to install anything. (5) not have to worry about what is in the rpm database that lives somewhere on my machine.

My first day of school at University and already I am feeling ill. I use Vector Linux on...

I don't know how to do (1) or (2) and I keep getting either usage messages or error messages along the lines of (3)-(5). What is the right way to do it? -- Ignorantly, * Disclaimer: I am a guest and *not* a member of the MIT CSAIL. My actions and * comments do not reflect in any way on MIT.
