By "the protocol", I meant the exact bulk-control-whatever messages that get sent to-from the USB device. The standard you mentioned may or may not include that info. If it does, groovy. If not, you're going to have to do some work. And when you use libusb, you don't open a device node directly, as you'd know if you'd looked at the docs. The device file is probably not where you're expecting it; check the bus numbers with lsusb and look underdev-bus-usb(if you're using udev.)

So I'm looking at the traffic logs for our router, and I found something odd. Every morning at 2am until 3:45am there's a consistant load of traffic coming from somewhere...

It may be that the people in the other branch of the thread are correct, and the thing is supported by usb-serial. Then all you'd have to do is point some userspace program that groks NMEA 0183 atdev-ttyUSB0 (or whatever the thing ends up being called). HTH,
