RealNetworks rep to Linux: DRM or die! Linux Is Dead Already 867Samba+NFS+SSH tunnel = file read problem My server is running RedHat 4.0 ES. I export the same share with Samba and with NFS over... Ian Hilliard I am running Fedora Core 5 on my Thinkpad T42. I have had similar experiences in that my batteries last longer under Linux than with Windows, even with all power saving items turned on under Windows. I don't know why this is but I think Linux throttles back the CPU when it is idle. I also notice that not only does Skype sound clearer, but even songs that I download from Rhapsody sound clearer. I think the CODECS that Linux uses are superior to the Windows variety. Office XP is slightly slower under Crossover Office and Linux, but it does NOT crash, ever which is something I can't say about the same exact program running under Windows Professional XP. Also, recently I opened up 49 documents at once while working on a book I am writing and Windows XP thrashed so badly it was unusable. Using Crossover Office and the same exact copy of Office XP I was able to open the 49 documents with no trouble at all. I have never had a problem with Linux printing nor scanning. I just make sure I buy hardware that is Linux friendly. I use a Brother printer and a Canon scanner. Same here. I use xine and the colors are sharper and the image more stable than with PowerDVD and Windows. Again I think it goes back to better CODECS. The Windows DVD player can't even handle the I confess I've never tried that screen resolution. The same videos look better with Linux. I don't particularly like Realplayer, but the Linux versions are less obtrusive than the Windows spyware infested ones. That's the best part about Linux! I don't have to worry about security at all. I apply my updates, keep my firewalls up and I am all set. No virus scanners. No trojan trappers. No spyware cleaners. Linux just works! RealNetworks rep to Linux: DRM or die! Linux Is Dead Already 868 Ian Hilliard Much longer? This longer battery life issue is an urban myth at best. All... That is the experience I have. We need to educate people about Linux and help them so that they can give Linux a try. Who knows, they might actually stick with it if they at least give it a try?
