I don't think I've ever seen a book specifically about sniffing, though I haven't been searching for one - they certainly could exist. Most of my knowledge came from several books on basic TCP (such as W. Richard Stevens clbuttics "TCP-IP Illustrated" 2 volumes - I've mainly used volume 1 ISBN 0-201-63346-9, 1994-1996, 576 pgs, US$LOTS, from Addison Wesley), and the many RFCs. Couple that with fundamental knowledge of Ethernet, you've about got it.

I miss moving from the San Francisco bay area - we had some outstanding technical book stores. None the less, have you looked at the university book stores? I actually bought my copy of Stevens 'Volume 1' at the Stanford University book store, where it was (at the time) a few bucks cheaper than the book store at two nearby Junior Colleges and three of the technical book stores. You might check with your local library to see if they have an inter-library loan program. The newly opened library about a half mile from my house claims to have 50,000 items on hand, but half of the books I've checked out have been borrowed (at my request) from other libraries in the county.

Agree with that. Most of the "21 minutes" or similar breastles are less than useless. The useful books are often used as textbooks in college clbuttes, or come from technical publishers like Addison Wesley or O'Reilly.

Have you looked at google?

Web Results 1 - 10 of about 434,000 for 'Network General' Sniffer. (0.31 seconds)

Network General used to sell a lapdog with custom software called the 'Sniffer' that was an expensive but occasionally more than worth it's weight in platinum. And the first ten hits above do look enticing.
