On Sunday 21 May 2006 19:49, nandu stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...:

I am by no means an expert on RedHat, but I can only share with you what I know about possible causes for a slow start-up. Your mileage will vary and you will have to check a number of things for yourself...

(1) If your system has too manydaemons- i.e. background processes and services - starting at boot time, it could take longer for the system to boot to a login prompt or a graphical login screen - or an eventual autologin, if you have that set.

(2) If your system is set up to support IPv6 while it is connected to an IPv4 ISP or router from which it gets its IP address via the DHCP protocol, this can and will slow your system down a lot.

(3) If your system hastmdnsrunning as one of the services that get started during boot-up, this will also slow your system down terribly.

Now, I'm not an expert on Windows - I have very little experience with it myself, although I did look at some of its internals from a general interest in operating system technology - but I sincerely doubt that you can boot up any computer and arrive at a logged-in desktop in 7 seconds.

I'm willing to accept that something is terribly slowing down your GNU-Linux boot-up sequence, but don't go throwing pro-Windows lies in our faces, because we're clever enough to know that what you're saying is bogus.

Lastly, please use a real newsreader instead of the broken Google Groups interface. Usenet is not a forum that exists on Google. We require enough quoted content - but trimmed correctly and without top-posting! - to know what you are talking about or whom you're talking to.

Please read the FAQ for this newsgroup and read up on the links provided in this FAQ regarding Google Groups and the correct way of posting to Usenet.

Thank you. ;-)
