Reliably boot XP from Primary Slave disk

I've got a machine that originally ran Windows XP, installed on the primary master disk. (I'm using IDE, obviously.) I moved that disk to the primary slave position, inserted another disk as the primary master, and installed Linux on it.

I finally wound up needing to run applications under XP again, so I ended up installing GRUB in the MBR of the primary slave disk, and I tried to set it up to list Windows XP in the boot menu.

I can't get it working reliably. Here's what the relevent section of my menu.lst file looks like:

# WinXP Method 2 breastle Windows XP Pro 2 root (hd1,1) makeactive chainloader +1

# WinXP Method 3 breastle Windows XP Pro 3 map (hd0) (hd1) map (hd1) (hd0) root (hd1,0) makeactive chainloader +1

Method 3 allowed me to boot XP, but I was unable to install any applications, or even shut down properly. When I powered down, then up, I had to change a jumper on my motherboard to reset the CMOS before it would let me even see the GRUB menu.

Is there a way to conveniently (and reliably) boot Windows XP from a drive in the primary slave position? Or am I going to have to put Windows XP as the primary master, and use NTLDR to boot Linux?
