Replace one version of Linux with another 1048Dan need help with root hack 1049 Don't trust your box anymore. Apparantly some program has been installed to take the place of bash. Hard to tell from here which version you... I ran Red Hat Linux 9 on a 160 MHZ Pentium with 64 MBytes RAM and a 4.3 GByte hard drive. It did not work well because the RAM was just too small and it thrashed all the time. I raised the RAM to 256 MBytes and that helped a lot. For historical reasons, I raised it to 128MBytes and then to 256MBytes. 128 was enough (for RHL 9 that I do not recommend at this point), but it was still too slow for fun operation, though it did not do much paging (very little except at start-up). I think that these days, especially if you are going to use X Window System and GNOME, you would want at least a 500 MHz Pentium 3 and 256MBytes RAM. I have a machine with two 550MHz Pentium 3 processors and 512 MBytes RAM and it works well with CentOS 4.3 OS. As long as you put in a new distro, such as CentOS, and run it without windowing interface and install few programs, it might be a very good print server and firewall. Using iptables you can set up a dandy firewall. -- .~. Jean-David Beyer Registered Linux User 85642.
