Everything worth using has been able to boot from CD-R* since the late 1990s. Who cares if that happens? When you build a new kernel, you *add* it to the already-existing GRUB config. You don't replace the working kernel in the GRUB config with the one you just built--that's an instant recipe for disaster, like putting a moose in a blender. That way, if the new kernel fails to boot, you just hit the reset button, and when the boot menu comes up, you choose the old, working kernel. That had problems with burning CDs, so you'll want 2.6.10 if you ever need to do that. The code needed to read-write XFS is freaking huge, so Tom's doesn't include it. Why did you use XFS for , anyway? XFS is much better suited for gigantic parbreastions with huge data files on them. If you have parbreastions like that, you keep them separate from . Also, reports from the col.* groups say that XFS is less reliable than other journalled filesystems when unplanned shutdowns happen.
