ProTools vs. Ardour. Why spend the money 775
snip I understand your frustration with the next version of name your hardware or OS breaking all kinds of...

I'd add too that having one huge data parbreastion is simply asking for trouble, and also slows down the system (true for NTFS as well as Reiserfs) -- max size I use is 40GB. The other advantage is that data backup parbreastions may be left unmounted most of the time, reducing the chance of 'finger trouble' wreaking havoc on stored data.

Also, I keep a few spare parbreastions around, as well as unallocated drive space, here's an example, sempro box has 120 + 160GB HDDs, dual boot:

Diskdev-sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors-track, 14593 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

ProTools vs. Ardour. Why spend the money 774
I have no idea why people think ProTools is overpriced. It's only overpriced if you want it and it's more than you want to pay for it. If you want to use it, buy...

(over 100GB unallocated on second drive)

I run a backup strategy of having copies of stuff on two other localnet boxen. Important stuff (project files) go to non-volatile CDROM storage.

I've been looking at selling my Protools rig and going completely Open Source as far as software...
