Wait a minute. nplanes=8 ? Are you trying to run in 8-bit color or something? Don't do that. The Geforce cards can all do 16 or 24-bit just fine, and everything'll look better in higher color depths. Most things probably won't work in 8-bit color depth. This probably means that it's not an X problem. I had a similar problem with Gentoo on my laptop a month or so ago; I upgraded a whole bunch of stuff and kdm kept saying "invalid pbuttword" and wouldn't let me log in as any user. Rebooting fixed that (go figure). That's what I think.
