No ! I want to use the original author's stuff-choice as much as possible. Anyway with your 'case-block-patch' it gets over the particular error, still run under ash ?! Which would imply that 'his' version of ash is different to my later version !!

By running and updating the references to the 'wrong directories' I could probably work the incompatibilities out. As I previously did with one of the applications. I was hoping for a magic solution, like the switches on some fd0-fd1; where just automagically all read references to eg.usr-bin-rna" are directed to eg.-mnt-p3-usr-bin-rna. Like a link or something.

No; I detest mc. It combines the disadvantages of a GUI with the disadvantages of the command line, and has few of the advantages of either.

That mc IS brilliant is confirmed by it being the continuation & refinement of the orignally well conceived decades old ap. - a true clbuttic. Which allows you to just recognise as humans have evolved to do rather than remember -- telephone number trivial like. eg. extract the url refering to 'dog' or 'DOG' from the file which was recent enough to be in the 6 latest files, and was AFAIK 3 uppercase-letters IDed you will recognise it when you see it in the one of the directories which is still 'stacked' on one of the mc-terminals; is a real life example.

If linux is so big a part of your life that you maintain fluency, then writing notes to the little-man-in-the-box may be easier, than selecting from a menu. For us that use a system-machine-language irregularly, the ability to 'recognise it when you see it' is invaluable.
