You have to set up even the friendliest Usenet client properly, usually by typing in "news.example.com" as the server name and entering a username and pbuttword. This intimidates some people. Browser-based interfaces have an advantage there, because even the dumbest person knows how to use a web browser now. HTML interfaces and-or web forums also have more pretty pictures than this part of Usenet does. People like pretty pictures, while many people are intimidated by lots of plain text.

A conspiracy wouldn't f**k around like that. If I had funding and a mandate and wanted to destroy an online community, I'd hire a Real Hacker and have him crack security on the machines of the most helpful report to the police, watch everything crumble. If that's not possible, DDOS the most helpful members.
The crapflooding that you mentioned seems like it might work to destroy a community, but it'd take a long time. Long-term planning is something that most American companies and government agencies are *terrible* at.
Well, everyone else can. So you have a sight or hearing problem. What does "man logrotate" tel you? In what way is it not helpful? Well...
