They only hang around if they get attention. That's all they care about. Negative or positive or neutral.
Hate them or love them or be indifferent, they don't care as long as you are responding to their posts.
Even THIS thread is feeding the trolls, because we are talking about them.
In this case, there is only one troll with a thousand aliases on 2 dozen newsservers through a dozen ISPs and mail-to-news gateways.
This troll is SEVERELY mentally ill. He's responsible for all the spam, the fake Christian posts, the loveo posts and the anti-linux posts and the anti-C-R posts and the paypal scam posts and the fake paypal-scam warning posts....
He's also responsible for endless, repebreastive, newbie posts, where he asks the same questions about shell scripting issues, over and over, using a different alias (etc) every time, because he can't REMEMBER for more than a few hours. He is a REAL nutcase.
He hates Linux because he can't run a computer without paint-by-the-numbers technical support like windows offers, because he is not mentally competent.
