Stop KDE from launching at boot 477Dances With Crows Okee dokee ;-) oh, before I forget -- after running 'apt-get install kdm' I was finally presented with the 3-4 Shutdown options (End Current Session, Turn Off Computer, Restart Computer, Cancel) that one 'usually' sees These choices were *not* present beforehand - I only got the End session screen (fade to gray). so.....here's what I did $ update-rc.d xdm defaults bash: update-rc.d: command not found $ sudo update-rc.d xdm defaults update-rc.d:etc-init.d-xdm: file does not exist $ sudo apt-get install xdm Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done The following NEW packages will be installed: xdm 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 309kB of archives. After unpacking 954kB of additional disk space will be used. Get:1 ftp:--ftp.de.debian.org stable-main xdm 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 309kB Fetched 309kB in 4s (71.0kB-s) Preconfiguring packages ... at this point i was presented with a typical blue Debian installer screen asking me to select *which* Desktop manager I want to use (kdm or xdm)...I chose xdm Selecting previously deselected package xdm. (Reading database ... 71890 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking xdm (from ...-xdm4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1i386.deb) ... Setting up xdm (4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1) ... Adding system startup foretc-init.d-xdm ... then I did this; $ sudo update-rc.d xdm defaults System startup links foretc-init.d-xdm already exist.
