Why am I not using 100% of cpu 4492
Try running only one process at a time (if possible), or put all MPI processes on a single CPU. If...

It seems to be mainly X and thunderbird plus my program. However their total virtual memory usage is ~340Mb, but swap usage is only ~75Mb. What gives? And if I close all the the extra apps I still have ~70Mb of swap usage.

I guess my original question boils down to, if there is free RAM (excluding buffers) available why doesn't linux put whatever's in the swap back into RAM automatically? Will it only do it as needed? Thanks for your input.

Your NIS client has 19MB in swap, I presume. Don't you use it (NIS)? I have much more realistic figures: root 1783 0.0 0.3 1444 780 ? S Aug16 0:00usr-sbin-ypbind -ypsetme So...
