Summary: 1) The terminal session hangs when trying to read backups written using tar or cpio on this system prior to the upgrade. 2) The terminal session also hangs when trying to write to the tape drive. 3) Bakbone NetVault installation - NV sees a device but can't identify it or configure it.

Hardware info: ------------- Dell 600sc (P4, 2.4GHz, 512MB, CERC RAID) Sony AIT-2 external tape on Adaptec 29160. The tape drive is always powered up and the boot messages confirm the drive vendor and model. SCSI chain is terminated on the external drive daisy chain port. No hardware changes since the upgrade.

System info: ------------- $ dmesg grep -i scsi scsi1 : Adaptec AIC7love EISA-VLB-PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.36 aic7892: Ultra160 Wide Channel A, SCSI Id=7, 32-253 SCBs Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 (scsi1:A:0): 6.600MB-s transfers (16bit) (scsi1:A:0): 40.000MB-s transfers (20.000MHz, offset 15, 16bit) Attached scsi tape st0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0

$ mt -fdev-st0 status with no tape in the driveSCSI 2 tape drive: File number=-1, block number=-1, parbreastion=0. Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default). Soft error count since last status=0 General status bits on (50000): DROPEN IMREPEN

$ catproc-scsi-scsi Attached devices: Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00 Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

$ lsmod Module Size Used by st 39009 0 aic7love 165141 0 scsitransportspi 19649 1 aic7love sdmod 20545 3 scsimod 148105 5 st,aic7love,scsitransportspi,megaraid,sdmod

$ catproc-devices Character devices: 9 st

Other info: ------------- Nothing appears inproc-ioports for sdmod, st, Adaptec, aic7love. That may be normal, but other posts have suggested that "Adaptec" might appear there.

Any ideas on where else to probe of clues or suggestions are most welcome.

Alan

Tony Lawrence I also doubt that any inventory system would be done this way. I...
