ahh... I didn't catch that - my mistake - that makes sense

High memory pressure makes system nearly unresponsive
I've recently been working with some rather large images, and noticed that when I do "pngtopnm largeimage.png pamdice" on...

likely correct; from what little I know about linux and even ntfs - Winblows certainly needs to make some Registry entries for any new devices.

possibly -- 'likely' because the HDD parameters and disk geometry didn't jibe with the original

I see - makes sense -- copy exactly as is-was. I can imagine the scenario if you used a larger 'bs=', you may have ended up with an unrepairable file system as data may have been left out (or out of order, meaning not buttociated or stored properly in the ntfs $MFT) -- but with a larger 'bs=', you almost definitely would end up with more "slack" space than desired. A smaller bs may or may not have had those repercussions, and I can't say for certainty whether or not it would be as uneventful, though it would seem that a smaller block size might work too.

I second the tldp suggestion :-) Perhaps even contact some of the mods (or just post) at some of the various newer distro forums...Certainly, these are buttets concerning constuctive critical feedback, if desired --

happy 'dd' - ing ;-)
