Have you tried to do this? There are utilities like this in linux (partimage springs to mind). But restore *anywhere*? I tried this last time I got rid of a laptop. Being too lazy to reinstall, I partimaged off the linux and windows filesystems. Got the new laptop, unpartimaged, and tried to boot. The linux "worked", for some value thereof, I did a fresh install shortly thereafter, in order to configure properly for the different hardware. The windows install choked completely. Seems windows stores some information about disk geometries, such that droping a installation from one disk to one sufficiently different (10GB laptop the free license for Boson Net Simulator that came with my CCNA study guide. :-( Now, I just run Win2k out of a file using vmware. Runs fine on a PIII 650 w384MB RAM, surprisingly.

Maybe. Not sure why we should care, though. One of four things will happen:
1) Linux will become widely adopted. Computer users will become more saavy. Life will be good.
2) Linux will become widely adopted. Computer users will stay as dumb as ever, as companies cater to what they think they want by make linux into windows. Those linuxes will suck, and I will continue to use Debian. Life will be good for me.

3) Linux continue will be used by people smart enough to read and think. Everyone else will be strangled from the internet by virus, worms, trojans, and other malware. Life will be good me.
4) Microsoft will do something shady, and linux will be outlawed in the United States. Life won't be worth living (here). I will either move overseas, or commit Seppuku on the steps of Congress. Undecided.
