The drive (as sold) had... Your Ubuntu machine that was installed by someone else: UBUNTU how do I do to connect me as administrator Help me !!! 4844 Hi Michael and John, I have to say that I regret a little to interrupt your beautiful discussion, but the guilt am mine that I have been inaccurate. We see better... Hmm. I'd say that something is broken. That is not the expected, normal behaviour from an Ubuntu system. What's supposed to happen is that any user listed in the "adm" group inetc-sudoers (by default, solely the user created during installation) types his-her own pbuttword at the prompt, and is given root-equivalent access for that task if he-she typed it correctly. Do so by undoing whatever system damage has occurred. My condolences for your having a broken system for whatever reason: It might be the case merely that there was some confusion between you and the person who built the system for you, in which caseetc-sudoers might need some fixing -- or, some variety of worse damage might have somehow occurred -- but your problem is not with Ubuntu per se, because the behaviour you describe is not how it works when functional. I hear you. The worst offender, it seems to me, remains GNOME. (gconf, anyone?) It's why the first thing I did on my iBook G3's Ubuntu Linux installation was disable GNOME startup and subsbreastute Window Maker. -- Cheers, My pid is Inigo Montoya. You kill -9 Rick Moen my parent process. Prepare to vi.
