Try Kaffeine or other media player (such as Noatun or even XMMS). Rhythmbox does NOT ship with mp3 codec support because of legal issues; this is why it is included in the Ubuntu repository and Kaffeine isn't. You can, however, download and install GStreamer packages with mp3 support from the apt repository, to give you mp3 functionality.

Check your backend (this is either Xine or GStreamer). Check what codecs you have installed. For minimum functionality, you need the following as well: Gnome 2.10 GStreamer 0.8.8 with plugins v0.8.7 or GStreamer 0.10 or xine-lib 1.0 Gromit 20041213 for the Telestrator mode libdvdcss for DVD playback.
