Ubuntu live CD 7078File Fragmentation 7079 Peter T. Breuer For a file system with fragments scattered throughout the parbreastion, this clearly becomes a concern. On average, I have to move the disk head 1-2 the... Snip...
Did Ubuntu recognize this and setup the dual boot OK? If it still boots a current XP install, it seems likely to me SOME version of Linux should be able to grok your basic hardware (but Linux video varies widely, IME). As others mentioned, typical consumers aren't interested in this stuff so many default Linux installs don't include it (except perhaps as an option after basic install is complete). I suspect that's the case in Ubuntu; of course I realize you need a better basic install to do this easily. Anything in Distrowatch matching your general requirements? It's not a problem with any *nix I've used over twenty years. The problem is mainly legacy systems that still insist on uppercase only. File Fragmentation 7080 You don't seem to get it; the scenario you paint only has meaning for msdos - there is no "next fragment" any more than there is a "next file". That is because you are... BTW, I Googled "ubuntu dell inspirion 2200" and found someone who appears to have made progress with Mandrake 10.0 on it: You might look it over and email them about the kinks you have. It's much easier to get hints from folks who have direct experience with a specific piece of hardware than trying to scattershoot a specialized solution from 200 or so possible Linux distros and a generalized Usenet group. If you'd just as soon have another shot a it that way, I'd try SuSE 10.0 and relay your questions to the (very handy, IMO) alt.os.linux.suse group. File Fragmentation 7081 Peter T. Breuer Believe me, I understand fragments. Yes, I understand them the MS-DOS way, I understand them theoretically, and I see them on my ext3 parbreastions. I don't...
