Don't wait so long between upgrades. It's less painful that way. You'll need to upgrade your gcc to at least 3.2, and you'll need to install module-init-tools at least version 3.0. You may need to upgrade your binutils as well. Depending on how old your distro is, packages may not exist, which leads to the fun of trying to compile gcc from source. If you run into that, you should think about scrapping your distro and getting a more recent one (or Debian or Gentoo).

Jumping from 2.2 to 2.6 will make it practically impossible to use "make oldconfig", so make sure you know how to use "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig". *Don't* remove your old kernel from your bootloader config file until you can successfully boot and run your 2.6 kernel and it loads all the modules you need and executes the programs you need.
