On Mon, 14 Feb 2005 12:10:28 +0100, Emmanuel Kaspryzk staggered into the Black Sun and said:

Emmanuel is referring to the -T option to mke2fs. "mke2fs -T largefiledev-hda9" will create a filesystem with one inode for every megabyte of space ondev-hda9. An inode is a special structure in the ext23 filesystem; every file, directory, symlink, and device uses one inode. It is not currently possible to add more inodes to an ext23 filesystem without rerunning mke2fs. Typically, mke2fs creates one inode for every 8K of space. This usually creates more inodes than you really need. However, space that's being used for inodes can't be used for data. Hence the -T option (and the -i and -N options, for people who want finer-grained control over the number of inodes.)

If this filesystem is going to be used to store files that are mostly over 1M in size, -T largefile will work fine.

Highly doubtful.

Yes, but it's not likely since the average mp3 is larger than 1M.
