When posting questions, please also mention the versions of your Operating Systems, what you tried and the sources you gathered information. We do not know your Windows version, your Linux version, kernel that you are using, VNC viewer's type-version (there's realvnc, tightvnc, ultravnc etc), your sources of information from google and whether or not you have VNC Server installed and configured. RealVNC has a free version of VNC Server, which is a small package.

buttuming that you have machines running Windows XP Professional on top of the hill and Linux distribution having vncviewer installed, the first thing to check is whether or not Windows XP Professional has VNC installed. buttuming that it is installed, check if it is configured Lock it down to your Linux machine's IP. Make sure your Windows XP Professional's firewall allows vnc (winvnc.exe) through to your Linux machine's IP (see if this answers some of your questions: server.

Once you have configured your VNC Server and started it, it should be listening to requests by default. buttuming your firewall is not hurting the connection, vncviewer from your Linux box will be able to get you to your Windows desktop. I am buttuming here that your Windows and Linux boxes can ping one another without a problem before you being anything.

An alternate method to logging onto your desktop system is rdesktop. This can be done from Linux itself buttuming you have rdesktop available on your Linux box. See if this helps -

As far as I remember, listen mode is set when the IP of your machine running VNC Server keeps on changing. That time, the server can invoke connection to the client. See these links to understand more about the search more with google regarding vnc+listen+mode

In future, if you have network related issue, post it under comp.os.linux.networking. If it is a windows related question, go with windows groups.

Cut this senseless August-Sept stuff off. This is comp.os.linux.misc. End of story.
