I wrote and use a "CUI".

It's a big case menu with many submenus running in a 'while true loop', with seperate files for functions and aliases (sourced in my ~-.bashrc).

Here's a sample of the main menu:

You have the choice of entering the number on the left, or memorizing the alias in parentheses. The "*" indicates a submenu.

It is integrated with screen, many of the options opening the apps (the vast majority being textmode) they call in a new (textmode) window.

Screen runs in an 'xterm' in a graphical window so that calling X apps, (which I don't do much) is effortless. I can surf with w3m, a textmode browser (which is very fast) and when needed just hit "M" to bring up the same page in Mozilla, then kill Mozilla and return.

You can also use the plastic rodent to cut&paste between apps running in a new graphical window and screen, although screen has its own cut&paste (no mouse) capabilities that are quite sophisticated, well beyond anything I've seen in a GUI.
