That machine used to... To the OP: Take a look a SimplyMepis (www.simplymepis.com). It is Debian based and is designed for easy configurations and setups through GUI tools and wizards as well as software upgrades through aptget. Slackware, on the other hand, can be quite daunting, if you're really not intimate with Linux. Also, if you can, I would upgrade your RAM to at least 256MB. And an 866MHz computer is not THAT hardware-challanged. I'm running Fedora Core 3 with the GNOME GUI on a 900MHz Duron with 256MB RAM, 80GB Maxtor HDD, and it runs just fine. Don't be reluctant to put a "better" hard drive in an older machine. A faster throughput hard drive will improve system performance as will increasing RAM, which normally has a greater influence on performance than a faster hard drive. This is what I did with my current machine: About a year ago, I replaced its old, slower 20GB drive, that was transferred from a 300MHz machine when I built the 900MHz one to replace it about 3 to 4 years ago, with a new, much, much faster 80GB Maxtor purchase new, on special, for $50. (I relegated the 20GB drive to slave duty for file storage-backup, a second swap, and space to test other Linux distros on.) There was an immediately noticeable and considerable improvement on system performance without changing anything else. -- Stefan Patric NoLife Polymath Group
