Do a minimum Debian install, choose a very light window manager like flwm, and forego the GIDE (Graphical Ingegrated Desktop Environment) Run everthing from a (I run screen in an aterm as my primary window manager. It is better by far than any of the graphical ones, but you still need a simple one to run graphical apps in a seperate graphical window or you can ony display one app at a time.)
