I buttumed that the 'compiled applications that the user will download from the internet' would have been compiled and created by yourself, for this purpose and answered accordingly. But it's not clear whether my interpretation or John-Paul's is correct.

What you are trying to do is not rocket science, but you will run into problems, and some of the posters are concerned that you don't have the level of experience to deal with the problems. Their concerns may or may not be appropriate but I'm going to go with some new-age inspirational-style urgings: regardless of your initial level of experience, any problem you come across *can* be solved, it's just going to be a matter of time. You have everything you need: RTFM, google, newsgroups, local linux-unix user group, program documentation and program source code. So mate, at the risk of sounding patronising, just let what you perceive as flaming-negativity slip back into the rear-view mirror...
