You are exaggerating. If you had done the above, you would not need to ask any questions about the requirements for a basic Linux system.

You would know, for example, that a filesystem is compiled into the kernel, or as a kernel module. It is not a seperate application.

I'm not a guru, but I have built several Linuxes from scratch.

It is not "packages" that you should be asking about. Packages are distro-specific. "Appllications and their dependencies" would be much more accurate.

And your choice of applications would depend on what it is that you want to do with your new Linux.
