On 5 Sep 2005 14:18:45 -0700, Random Penguin staggered into the Black Sun and said: proc is a pseudo-filesystem. If you look a little more deeply atproc , as with ls -l , you'll see that almost every file inproc has a size of 0. This is by design. proc is essentially a filesystem interface to the kernel data structures for a lot of things. Every process has aproc entry, there areproc entries for most of the buses on the system, and there are tunable parameters in various subdirectories for enables IP-forwarding, f'rexample. The sysfs onsys in 2.6 kernels is sort of like an addon-revision ofproc , though it's a bit harder to figure out and doesn't include process information. That's application-dependent. Remember that if you unlink() a file that's in use, it doesn't actually get deallocated until all processes that have the file open exit. Thus, if you rm -flib-libc* , you won't be able to start any new applications0, but applications you already started will continue to run since they already have libc open. unlink()ing stuff inproc is not possible AFAICT. No. See first paragraph.
